What is a subwoofers?

I'm looking at buying 2 12's, but are they going to be loud. I'm looking for them to be loud as they can be, my amp is 500 watts, and its a hatchback 07 toyota yaris. I heard that 10's are going to be louder. Can someone explain this to me?
